The C Word

The discovery of a lump is never a fun experience. In August I found a small lump in my right breast. I had just started a new job and had to wait to receive my insurance card before I scheduled an appointment with my physician. As scheduling usually goes it took a bit to get an appointment. My physician made the prediction that the lump was more than likely fibrous tissue. He was not concerned due to my age. The next step was a mammogram and ultrasound which was sadly scheduled 3-4 weeks later. On September 20th I received my first mammogram and ultrasound. The mass was visible and a biopsy was scheduled for September 22nd.

Brandon and I went on vacation to San Diego while awaiting the results. The results came as a shock on September 24th. The mass was malignant. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 3 (highly aggressive). We returned home early from our vacation and jumped on the roller coaster of doctor appointments. I have been very lucky and all of my doctors have been moving quickly to set up a plan of action to remove the carcinoma and begin treatment and recovery.

MRI results show that the mass is 2.5 x 2.3 x 2.3 cm  and there are no signs of metastatic disease (the cancer hasn't spread!). My oncologist and surgeons have explained my options to me and I will be having a double-mastectomy and reconstruction surgery followed by 8 cycles of chemotherapy. The journey is going to be long and rough but I WILL BEAT THE BIG C!
